I-80 westbound lane closures for pothole repairs near Exit 30/Howard Boulevard in Mount Arlington, Morris County
Daytime lane closures necessary Tuesday and Wednesday
(Trenton) – I-80 westbound is scheduled to have lane closures on Tuesday for priority pothole repairs and restriping the highway near Exit 30/Howard Boulevard, as the I-80 Bridges over Howard Boulevard replacement project advances in Mount Arlington, Morris County.
From 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 25 and again on Wednesday, February 26 at the same time, two lanes on I-80 westbound are scheduled to be closed starting at milepost 31.5, which is before Exit 30/Howard Boulevard, through milepost 29.9. At least one lane will be maintained. I-80 eastbound will not be affected.
The closures are necessary for pothole repairs resulting from normal wear and tear, as well as the harsh winter that has had frequent precipitation and significant freeze/thaw cycles. I-80 westbound also will be restriped. If work is not completed on Wednesday, it will continue on Thursday, February 27 at the same time.
The $65.4 million federally funded project will replace the existing bridges carrying I-80 eastbound and I-80 westbound over Howard Boulevard/CR 516, which are in poor condition. Improvements will include raising the vertical clearance of each bridge, widening the shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80, and widening the ramps to and from Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will be reconfigured to improve operational performance.
The project will also include upgraded traffic signals and lighting, and ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station for improved pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
