I-80 eastbound right lane also to be closed tonight

(Trenton) – The I-80 eastbound ramp from Howard Boulevard southbound is scheduled to be closed and detoured tonight, as the I-80 Bridges over Howard Boulevard bridge replacement project advances in Mount Arlington, Morris County. In addition, the right lane on I-80 eastbound is scheduled to be closed tonight.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, December 13, 10 a.m., tomorrow, Saturday, December 14, the Howard Boulevard southbound ramp to I-80 eastbound is scheduled to be closed. The ramp from Howard Boulevard northbound to I-80 eastbound is expected to remain open. In addition, the right lane on I-80 eastbound is scheduled to be closed at mile post 29.9 until the I-80/Howard Boulevard Interchange. At least one lane will be maintained on I-80 eastbound during construction. The ramp and lane closures are necessary to install bridge girders. The following detour will be in place:

Howard Boulevard southbound ramp to I-80 eastbound Detour:

  • Motorists on Howard Boulevard southbound wishing to take the ramp to I-80 eastbound will be directed to take the ramp to I-80 westbound, which is before the ramp to I-80 eastbound

  • Take Exit 27A to Route 206 southbound/Somerville

  • Stay right to take the ramp to I-80 eastbound

The $65.4 million federally funded project will replace the existing bridges carrying I-80 eastbound and I-80 westbound over Howard Boulevard/CR 516, which are in poor condition. Improvements will include raising the vertical clearance of each bridge, widening the shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80, and widening the ramps to and from Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will be reconfigured to improve operational performance.

The project will also include upgraded traffic signals and lighting, and ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station for improved pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
