Participants in the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum’s quiz night errupt with cheers after hearing they answered a question correctly.

LHHM hosts Quiz Night event

MOUNT ARLINGTON – A capacity crowd filled the historic Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club’s main hall, recently, with teams battling each other for bragging rights to be crowned most knowledgeable about Lake Hopatcong history.

Marty Kane, president of the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum, played host and emcee at this year’s quiz night, only the second time LHHM hosted such a night. Twenty teams of half dozen to a dozen participants discussed, reasoned and debated possible answers to the multitude of questions put forth by Kane, spanning decades of lake history. Questions like: How many islands make up the Sister Islands? (Three) Or: What was the original use for the fountain at Hopatcong State Park? (To regulate water flow into Musconetcong River) And: What was the name of the roller coaster at Bertand Island Amusement Park? (Wildcat)

The Lakers, a team made up of eight residents from each side of the lake, emerged victorious. Led by two life-long lake residents Brenda Fisch and Todd Stevens, The Lakers also got help from Stevens’ wife Barb, Hank and Lisa Nissel, Larry Morgan, Brenda’s husband, Mark and Fred Steinbaum. Mark Fisch and Steinbaum both serve on the Lake Hopatcong Commission.

The LHHM hosted its first quiz night two years ago and had “a great response,” said Kane. This year’s event sold out quickly, he added.

The four-hour event kicked off with a buffet dinner and dessert served by the Yacht Club staff, followed by the distribution of raffle prizes and finally the quiz competition. Members of the first place team were each awarded pewter Lake Hopatcong pins. Members of the team that finished last, The Moops, received Lake Hopatcong Yo-Yo’s.

The Museum’s next event, ‘The Other Famous Folks of Lake Hopatcong’ is scheduled for Thursday, July 10 at the Jefferson House. The event begins with dinner at 6pm.
