Hello dear readers – it’s me, Barbara Simmons, your new editor at the Lake Hopatcong News and Reviews. I am in the process of filling some big shoes as I start to take over for Jess Kitchin. Jess is handing over the reins as we speak and I am proud and excited to be working here.
I am looking forward to getting to know all of you folks from all of the townships on the lake. I’m a “moved here and grew up here” lake kid. I spent my formative years on the east shore of the lake in Jefferson Township sailing, waterskiing, swimming, ice skating, and enjoying gorgeous sunsets. My dad, Horst Kertscher, was an avid fisherman and an active member of the Knee Deep Club. My mom, Gertrude Kertscher, was a well-loved teacher of German at the Dover High School. Gertrude loved entertaining all of the guests that would come visit us at the lake every weekend. We never had to go away on vacation—we had paradise in our front yard.
As you’ve probably gathered from my first few articles, I love the outdoors, especially birdwatching. I want to share stories about wildlife, conservation, nature hikes taking place in the area and resources for kids and adults with you. If you have any suggestions for future story ideas I would love to hear them. I can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org. Till then, see you on the lake!
